My name is Sarah, and I'm a Sophomore Music Therapy Student here at Converse. I took the fall semester off, which is why you probably haven't seen me in a while (or at all), but I'm so happy to be back! I've played the cello for almost 10 years now, and I've been singing practically my whole life, so music is (obviously) a big part of my life.
I have a lot of hobbies, but my main ones generally have something to do with the fiber arts- I love sewing, crocheting, and especially knitting. I also have a passion for learning about historical fashion, and hope to one day sew a whole slew of historical dresses and gowns. I enjoy reading and I am a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings. I like to listen to most genres of music, but what I want to listen to usually changes depending on my mood, or the vibe of my environment.
Music that I like right now:
I recently discovered the song "Like a Tattoo" by the singer Sade Adu. The song is about a man recalling an experience of his during the Vietnam war that continues to haunt him years later. I really like music that is interesting and different in some way, and this song definitely does that for me. I haven't really heard many songs about war before, so the subject of the song is interesting to me at face value anyway. But what I love so much is how it's also a song about memories, life, death, trauma, and guilt. The lyrics are so well written, and they paint the story in such an interesting way, especially the last line. And its so interesting musically as well- I don't really think I can adequately explain how good I think this song is- Just listen to it for yourself:
Music that is personally meaningful to me:
I tend to really like what I call "sad girl bops" and the artist PinkPantheress is the queen of the sad girl bop genre to me, especially in her album "to hell with it". I believe I discovered her a little before Covid started in 2020. As a teen girl with undiagnosed ADHD at the time, I wasn't doing well in school, my mental health was really suffering, and Covid definitely didn't help with that. Her music reflected how I felt at the time and so it stuck with me. One of her songs that really reflected this was her song "Passion". I still really like it and relate to it (probably even more so than I used to), but unfortunately I've realized that I really have to limit my contact with the sad girl genre because it isn't beneficial for me to listen to especially when I am trying to grow and heal.
Music that isn't really my taste:
The song bad habits by Ed Sheeran just isn't really enjoyable to me. I can't really relate to the lyrics and I find that the chorus tends to get stuck in my head a lot which i find a bit annoying. Radio Pop in general isn't really my cup of tea, but I understand that some people like it, and that's great!
I have to agree with you about the song "Bad Habits" and the radio-pop genre. I personally do not like that genre of music, but understand why people like it because of the catchy quality. I also really like the song "Like A Tattoo". I've only heard it a couple of times so I liked that you included the background of the song.
I am with you on the radio-pop genre. I also find it way too catchy and it gets stuck in my head along with other radio songs. I have never heard of the song "Like A Tattoo." It is a mellow song and I really like the slower pace of the song. The piano riff in the middle of it was golden.
I am also a fan of the "sad girl bop" genre, stuff with meaningful lyrics that is still catchy. I can relate to having to stop listening to it as much for your own sake; I've also had experience with sad music feeding into my problems rather than being helpful. I agree with you on the Ed Sheeran song; it's one of the ones that I'll hear in stores and just get a little bit annoyed with. I can see the appeal, it's jut not for me.
